How To Start Blogging with WordPress

September 13th, 2010

WordPress is perhaps the most impressive, powerful, and widely used blogging CMS there is. For beginners and non-technical types, it’s incredibly easy to set up, even if you’re using your own domain. More advanced users can tweak WordPress to an incredible degree with themes and plug-ins, and power users can even adjust the open-source code with a basic text editor.

This is a great article from MacLife. You can skip steps 1-4 if you decide to host with me or Heart Internet!

Why a Prospective Client Should Choose You

September 12th, 2010

There are thousands of other freelancers out in the wild, so why should a prospective client choose you over your competition? They aren’t to know what will happen if they do or don’t hire you and they aren’t to know how you’ll carry out their project but if they somehow did know then they would choose you, wouldn’t they?

Work Place Set-up

August 26th, 2010

I am often interested in seeing other developers set-up’s i.e how they go about doing their projects and what software and hardware they use. So for the first time, here is mine.

I have made the transition from Windows to Linux and finally over to Apple Mac through my career so far. I am currently using a Mac Mini with dual monitors which works nicely.
As for software I go about making mock-ups in Photoshop CS5 or sometimes in iWork Keynote after seeing an article in MacUser magazine (16th July issue) titled “Keynote Vs. Photoshop – Not as crazy as it sounds”.

For the actual build of sites I use Panics Coda. As the name suggests this is for coding sites rather than using WYSIWYG drag and drop utilities.
Why do I use Coda? Actually it was a face-off between Coda and MacRabbit’s Expresso. Both are premier products and theres little between them, but for me the projects looked better and the block editing is an excellent feature especially when making small changes to list items.

I sometimes work with PHP files, so to get them to run locally (i.e on my machine) is a valuable tool. For this I use MAMP (The free version) which allows you to run your Mac with Apache, Mysql, and PHP. Its basically the same idea as WAMP for Windows or LAMP for Linux. This also works nicely when working with Open Source CMS’s as I can work on templates locally.

Along with MAMP I use VirtualHostX. This enables easy virtual host management. I am a bit lazy with this as adding Virtual Hosts is just a case of editing the Apache files, but to have a GUI program to do it for you is a nice touch.

When the site is completed locally I can then put it on my staging server which I use via Heart Internet and then onwards to the clients domain for launch.

So thats the stuff I use to do my work. Let me know how you it. You can also see a bit of my workspace on my about page!

Edit: The pic is from my pre-Mac days!

Concrete5 now a preferred CMS

August 22nd, 2010

Concrete5 CMSConcrete5, the Open Source CMS has now been added to my preferred choice of content management systems. Whilst Heart Internet does not offer a one click install, I can provide installation included in a project or standalone for a nominal fee.
Concrete5 was added to the CMS product list after just two weeks of testing. During these two weeks of testing it was easy to see how useful this could be for clients as adding pages and articles has almost no learning curve. It really is the most developer friendly CMS I have ever used and can make a basic demo site from scratch in under three minutes!
My favourite  feature for users is being able to visually edit your pages without going through a long drawn-out button clicking process. Just click on the section you want and edit away.

Stay tuned for news on some upcoming Concrete5 projects!

What makes a cool brand?

August 20th, 2010

In many cases, what is and isn’t cool can be quite subjective, with not everyone agreeing on the answer. However, there are many brands and websites where the large majority would agree “Yeah, that’s cool”. Brands falling in to this category that spring to mind at the time of writing are Bose, Apple (yeah, Apple), Dribbble, Tag Heur and HBO. These brands, and all ‘cool’ brands, share common characteristics that can be applied to any website, product or service. These are; Premium Price, aesthetics, originality, exclusivity, targeted advertising.

Heart Internet looks at how to build a cool brand, which is one of the many things that will sell your products or services.

July 1st, 2010

For any of you having signal problems with the new iPhone, MacRumors have come up with an answer. The issue seems to be with the sim card touching part of the antenna. The problem can be fixed with a piece of electrical tape.

Twitter Gets a Business Model

May 20th, 2010

Twitter will now start applying sponsored Tweets to its searches. Rather than having a banner or some other sort of advertising they will be default looking tweets with a tiny bit of added text “Promoted by…” as shown below.
Sponsored Tweet

Advertising is only currently available with their “chosen innovative advertising partners” – i.e big brands such as Starbucks, Red Bull, and Sony to name a few.
I guess in the future users would be able to sponsor their own Tweets, but at the moment that would have little effect as new tweets go to the top of the list anyway.

BBC: Britons spend more than ‘one day a month online’

May 19th, 2010

The BBC has an article in their tech section on how much time Brits spend online. Almost a day a month. Whilst this sounds a lot its under an hour a day. The story also looks in to what people do online. No major surprises. Social Networking takes up almost a quarter of users time online. Email and games follow with about a 7% share. Bottom of the list comes adult content at just 2.7%…Guessing a lot of lies were told in this study.

Stunning Origami Style Web Icons

May 5th, 2010

After creating my Twitter bird logo in an origami style a week ago, I wondered what other icons would look good all origamized.  Turns out a few of the web 2.0 apps/sites look great, so I decided to create a little collection for everyone to use as they see fit.  I suppose you could look at these with the view that web 2.0 companies can be extremely beautiful objects, yet are still very fragile and can be crushed instantly.

Its not often I come across something as cool as this. Check out these icons which are a mix of browsers, social networking sites and shortcut icons.
